Four bogies of a freight train left the rails near Rukanpur in Lodhran overnight, disrupting the main up track on a busy stretch of Pakistan Railways.
The service involved was the Yusufwala coal freight train running from Karachi toward Sahiwal. Railway officials said the wagons came off the track in the accident, and the main up line had still not been cleared roughly seven hours later.
Relief work at the site
According to a railway spokesperson, relief trains had already arrived at the scene and restoration work was continuing. Crews were focused on clearing the derailed bogies and making the line safe for traffic again.
Until that work finishes, the up track remains closed. That closure is what has driven delays for passenger services sharing the same corridor.
Passenger trains delayed
With the up track blocked, Tezgam and Allama Iqbal Express were among the trains facing delays, the railway spokesperson indicated, along with other services affected by the same restriction.
Travellers on those routes should expect longer journey times until railway staff reopen the line and clear the backlog of held or slowed services.
