Section 144 has been imposed in South Waziristan for Saturday by two district administrations, which restricted public movement, ordered markets closed and limited travel on several major routes because of security concerns. The notices were issued on Friday evening by the Lower and Upper South Waziristan administrations, and both tie the restrictions to the movement of logistical supplies for security forces. Section 144 is a legal provision that lets district authorities impose temporary limits on movement and gatherings when they judge public order to be at risk.

Where the restrictions apply

Lower South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner Musarrat Zaman and Upper South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner Irfan Ali issued separate notifications. The Lower notice covers Wana Bazaar, the Wana Bypass and several other localities, and prohibits movement along routes passing through Wana, Tiarza Gate, Karab Kot, Tanai, Azizabad Chowk and Dargai Bridge. Entry onto the routes connecting Gul Kach with Toi Khullah and Tanai was also strictly prohibited.

In Upper South Waziristan, the order covers Servekai and Sararogha tehsils and adjoining areas, and it directs the closure of markets and commercial centres there. Entry was barred on roads leading to Ladha, Makeen, Sararogha, Nazar Khel, Madi Jan, Sheen Warsak and Jandola, among other routes. Residents were told to avoid those roads until the relevant authorities permit travel.

Travel rules and enforcement

Under both notices, travel on the affected routes is allowed only in emergencies and with prior authorisation from police or security forces. In the Upper areas, the notice also requires verification of identity documents. Motorists were told to stop their vehicles at least 50 metres away on seeing security forces.

The administrations warned that people who violate the restrictions will be held responsible for their actions under the applicable law. Residents were asked to avoid unnecessary movement and to follow instructions from the authorities. The Section 144 imposed in South Waziristan applies to named towns, roads and markets, and the notices set the restrictions for Saturday without stating a longer end date.
