The Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA), the federal body steering the country’s digital agenda, has told a parliamentary committee that effective digital transformation could add $60 billion to $80 billion to Pakistan’s GDP over the next five years. Officials briefed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication on the Authority’s mandate, strategic objectives and the National Digital Master Plan. The meeting was chaired by Syed Amin ul Haq.
What the National Digital Master Plan covers
PDA said the National Digital Master Plan was drawn up in consultation with provincial and sectoral stakeholders. The National Digital Commission—the high-level body that oversees national digital policy—has approved the plan and issued directives for putting it into practice.
The strategy is built on three pillars. Digital Society aims to widen citizens’ access to digital services and foster an inclusive online environment. Digital Economy seeks growth through digital innovation, technology adoption and changes across economic sectors. Digital Governance focuses on stronger institutional efficiency, greater transparency and better public service delivery through digital tools.
How implementation is meant to work
The Authority said it will prepare a comprehensive digital roadmap with key performance indicators and clear implementation parameters. That roadmap is intended to guide federal and provincial institutions as well as sectoral stakeholders.
All relevant departments and institutions will be required to align their digitalisation initiatives with the master plan. PDA presented this as a way to keep nationwide efforts coordinated and consistent rather than fragmented across agencies.
What PDA says comes next
PDA restated its role in giving strategic direction and a coordinated implementation framework. The stated aims are to strengthen the digital economy, improve governance and move Pakistan towards a digitally empowered society. No detailed timetable for individual projects was set out in the briefing summary available here; the next concrete step described is the roadmap with measurable targets for institutions to follow.
