The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the country’s telecom regulator, has begun blocking WhatsApp accounts that were registered on inactive or cancelled SIM cards. The move, reported from Islamabad, is meant to reduce the risk that someone else can take over or misuse a WhatsApp account after a mobile number leaves its original owner.
Why inactive and cancelled SIMs are a risk
Telecom companies may reissue inactive or cancelled mobile numbers to other customers under set procedures. When that happens, the previous owner’s WhatsApp account—still tied to that number—can be exposed to misuse or unauthorised access. Blocking accounts linked to numbers that are no longer active is intended to cut that pathway.
PTA officials said the action started only after users were warned through an awareness campaign. The authority had already told people to keep WhatsApp linked to mobile numbers that are active and in their own use, so they do not lose access or leave an old registration hanging on a dead line.
What the PTA is asking users to do
A PTA spokesperson advised customers to confirm that their mobile SIMs are still active. Anyone who has changed their mobile number should update that number on WhatsApp. The guidance is straightforward: WhatsApp should stay registered only on a number the user still holds.
The authority framed the blocks as a protective step for account holders, not as a general restriction on messaging. The focus is on registrations that sit on SIMs that have gone inactive or been cancelled—situations where the link between person, number, and app can break down.
What happens next for account holders
People whose SIMs are active and still in their possession should not need to change habits beyond the usual care of keeping registration details current. Those who cancelled a line, let a SIM lapse, or moved to a new number without updating WhatsApp are the group most likely to feel the effect of the blocks.
Users who are unsure about their status can check with their mobile operator whether the SIM is active, then open WhatsApp’s account settings to confirm the registered number matches the one they use. Updating that number after a change remains the clearest way to stay in control of the account.
Aasan alfaaz mein
PTA ne inactive aur cancel SIM par registered WhatsApp accounts block karna shuru kar diya hai. Purane number dusre bande ko mil sakte hain, is liye purana WhatsApp misuse ho sakta tha. Apni SIM active rakhein aur number badlein to WhatsApp par naya number update karein. Sirf usi number par WhatsApp rakhein jo ab bhi aap ke paas ho.
