WhatsApp has announced four updates aimed at busy WhatsApp group chats, giving people clearer ways to share updates, keep key notes visible, bring new members up to speed and spot messages that need a reply. The company said the tools are arriving gradually for users on Android and iOS after the 29 October 2026 announcement, so not every phone will show them at once.
Group Status stays inside one chat
The standout addition is Group Status. Members can post a status that only people in that group can see, instead of choosing contacts from a wider list as with a regular WhatsApp Status. Others in the group can view the update, react to it and post their own. Like ordinary statuses, Group Status posts vanish after 24 hours. WhatsApp positions the tool for photos, short announcements and everyday notes that should not spill into other contacts’ feeds.
Pins that no longer expire
Group chats previously limited pinned messages to 24 hours, seven days or 30 days. That ceiling is going. Users can now keep an important message pinned with no expiry, so members do not have to re-pin the same note when the old clock ran out. Meeting details, addresses and standing announcements are the kinds of posts WhatsApp says will be easier to find this way.
Catch-up history and a Mentions filter
WhatsApp is also widening Group Message History. Groups could already share recent history when someone was added. Now members can pass older messages to a person after they have joined, by tapping that member’s name in the chat and choosing to share recent messages. WhatsApp says those shared messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption—meaning only the people in the chat can read them, not WhatsApp itself.
The fourth tool is a chat filter labelled Mentions and replies. It lists unread group conversations where someone mentioned you or replied directly to your message, and it also picks up @all alerts meant for everyone in a group. For anyone juggling several active WhatsApp group chats, the filter is meant to cut the need to scroll every unread thread.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- Before this update: pinned group messages were capped at 24 hours, seven days or 30 days; recent history was mainly shared when a member was added.
- 29 October 2026: WhatsApp announced Group Status, permanent pins, expanded history sharing and the Mentions and replies filter.
- Ongoing: the four features are rolling out in stages on Android and iOS, so availability will differ by user.

WhatsApp ne group chats ke liye char naye tools announce kiye hain. Ab aap sirf apne group ke logon ke saath Status bhej sakte hain, aur zaroori message hamesha pin reh sakta hai. Naye member ko baad mein purani chat history bhi di ja sakti hai, aur Mentions wala filter bataega ke kis group mein aapka zikr hua. Features Android aur iOS par dheere dheere aa rahe hain, is liye kuch users ko pehle milenge.
