Squarespace will remove approximately 19% of the company’s global workforce, covering around 300 employees, the website builder has confirmed. Jeff Seedman, a public relations specialist speaking for Squarespace, said the firm is restructuring how it is organised. He said the cuts are meant to simplify operations, sharpen priorities and help the company move faster as it prepares for its next phase of growth.
Why the company is cutting roles
Squarespace helps customers design and host their own websites. Seedman described the job losses as part of a broader internal reorganisation rather than a one-off trimming of a single team. “The changes are intended to simplify how we operate, sharpen our priorities and enable the company to move faster as we position Squarespace for its next phase of growth,” he said.
That framing places the layoff announcement inside a wider effort to reset how the business runs after several years of shifting ownership and product plans. The company has not presented the reduction as a temporary pause in hiring; it is a cut of roughly one in five roles worldwide.
AI pressure on website builders
Website building has changed quickly as generative AI tools spread. Newer “vibe-coding” builders let people create working front-end designs from short prompts, which lowers the effort needed to launch a site. That shift has become central to competition in the sector.
Last year, rival web host Wix bought Base44 for $80 million. Lovable, another AI-focused offering, raised a $400 million Series C round in August that valued the company at $13.3 billion. Google has also launched Stitch, a feature that generates user-interface designs quickly. Against that backdrop, Squarespace has expanded its own AI work: it launched Blueprint in 2024 and recently announced Forma, an upcoming AI-native platform that already has a waitlist.
From public markets back to private ownership
Squarespace was founded in 2004 and listed publicly in 2021 at a $10 billion valuation. Public-market enthusiasm later faded, and in 2024 the company went private again through a $7 billion private equity deal. The restructuring and workforce reduction now sit alongside that ownership change and the firm’s AI product push, as management argues for a leaner setup and clearer priorities.
For customers and freelancers who rely on hosted website tools, the immediate public message is organisational, not a product shutdown notice. The scale of the cut—about 300 people—nonetheless signals how sharply website platforms are rethinking costs and speed while AI rivals raise large sums and ship prompt-based builders.
