Apple’s new MacBook Pro is now official: on 28 October 2026 in Cupertino, Apple introduced 14- and 16-inch models with a PROLED XDR Display, the first touch controls on a Mac laptop, and M5 Pro and M5 Max processors aimed at demanding creative and technical work.
What Apple announced
Apple says the PROLED XDR panel uses tandem OLED technology for front-of-screen performance it describes as a step change for Mac. Peak HDR and SDR brightness reach up to 2000 nits, contrast is listed at 10,000,000:1, refresh is a 120Hz variable rate, and the colour gamut covers both P3 and Adobe RGB. Touch is framed as a new way for professionals to manipulate 3D models or play instruments on screen.
The Dynamic Island—already familiar from iPhones—now appears on Mac as a home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. Apple also cites up to 24 hours of battery life in thinner, lighter designs it puts at about 3 and 4 pounds, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, a 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones, a six-speaker system with 50 percent deeper bass, up to 128GB of unified memory, up to 16TB of storage, and macOS 27.
Display accuracy and early impressions
Beyond brightness and touch, the laptop is the first notebook—and only the second Apple product overall after the Studio Display XDR—to support Apple CMF 2026 colour modes. Those colour-matching functions are meant to keep images looking consistent across display technologies and viewers, addressing limits of the older CIE 1931 standard that many reference modes still use.
In a brief Los Angeles hands-on, reviewers said the chassis feels noticeably lighter than a recent 14-inch MacBook Pro, that the OLED image stands out even when the overall design is familiar, and that the Dynamic Island cutout is less dominant on a laptop screen than on a phone. The Apple logo on the lid lights up again when the machine is open. Fullscreen games and long-term touch behaviour were not fully tested in that short session.
