HBL Microfinance Bank Islamic banking has formally begun in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the inauguration of the lender’s first Islamic banking branch in Timergara after the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP)—Pakistan’s central bank—granted it an Islamic banking licence. The bank framed the opening as part of a wider push to bring more people into the formal financial system through products designed around Islamic rules.
First branch opens in Timergara
The new outlet in Timergara is the bank’s first dedicated Islamic banking branch. According to a press release from HBL Microfinance Bank Limited (HBL MfB), the licence from the SBP cleared the way for full Islamic banking operations. Islamic banking here means services structured to follow Shariah principles—rules drawn from Islamic finance, typically built around risk-sharing and asset-backed contracts rather than conventional interest.
The Timergara branch is therefore not a routine product update. It marks the start of a separate Islamic banking track for a lender that has long focused on microfinance—small-scale banking and credit for households and businesses that often struggle to use larger commercial banks.
Who the services are meant for
Through HBL Microfinance Bank Islamic banking, the institution says it will offer Shariah-compliant options to individuals, micro-entrepreneurs, farmers and communities that prefer banking aligned with Islamic principles. That mix reflects the bank’s existing focus on underserved customers rather than only urban salaried clients.
HBL Microfinance Bank was established in 2002 and says it already serves millions of customers across Pakistan. In its own words, Islamic banking is a natural extension of that mandate: giving people more ways to save, borrow and grow businesses without stepping outside the financial model they consider religiously acceptable.
What the bank says next
President and CEO Amir Khan described the launch as a “key milestone” in making financial services “more inclusive, accessible and responsive.” He said the Timergara branch is “a step in the right direction, especially for those who need our services the most,” and that it should help customers “thrive with confidence.”
Looking ahead, the bank said it intends to scale Islamic banking further while continuing to support economic activity nationwide. No timetable, product list or additional branch locations were set out in the material released with the inauguration.
