OpenAI is combining ChatGPT’s Chat and Work tabs and advancing an OpenAI ChatGPT Codex merge so both products draw from one shared token pool, the company told users in an email. The company said the combined chat experience will reach select users first for feedback, then roll out more widely.

The ChatGPT desktop app currently splits ChatGPT and Codex, and ChatGPT itself has separate Chat and Work tabs. OpenAI framed the tab change as a way to keep idea exploration and follow-through work in one place, rather than jumping between screens.

What is changing in the ChatGPT app

In the email, OpenAI said users will be able to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through in a single flow. People can bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do tasks on the web, while reviewing and guiding that work.

Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app. The company is not folding Codex into the same tab as everyday chat; the interface change is about Chat and Work inside ChatGPT.

Shared usage after the ChatGPT Codex merge

Alongside the tab change, OpenAI said ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool. That is the practical core of the OpenAI ChatGPT Codex merge for people who use both products under one account.

OpenAI said the shift will not affect most users. Based on usage and model choice, some people may need to wait for allowance resets more often than before.

What happens next

The company is testing with a limited group before a broader release. Users who already juggle Chat, Work, and Codex should watch for the new layout and for how shared tokens feel on busy days.

Separately, rival Anthropic combined Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September, a similar push toward fewer split workspaces in AI desktop tools.

Timeline: what has happened so far

  • September: Anthropic merges Claude’s chat and Cowork into one screen.
  • 2 November 2026: OpenAI emails users about merging ChatGPT’s Chat and Work tabs and putting ChatGPT and Codex on one token pool, starting with select users.

Aasan alfaaz mein

OpenAI ChatGPT ke Chat aur Work tabs ko ek jagah laa raha hai. ChatGPT aur Codex ab aik hi usage pool se tokens lenge. Codex alag experience hi rahega desktop app mein. Zyada tar users par asar kam hoga, lekin zyada use karne walon ko reset ka intezar jaldi karna pad sakta hai.
