Amazon is rolling out Kindle software version 5.20.2, which adds the AI-powered Ask This Book feature to supported dedicated e-readers. The tool acts as an interactive reading companion: readers can ask about plot points and characters, request summaries, and continue earlier threads of questions and answers.
The same feature has been available on the Kindle iOS app since last December. Amazon had signalled for more than a year that it would eventually reach hardware Kindles. The new firmware is described as one of the company’s largest device downloads, at roughly 643 MB, and it installs automatically rather than appearing as a manual option on Amazon’s update page.
How Ask This Book works on a Kindle
Readers can open Ask This Book through the search function or by highlighting a word or passage. Answers can be limited to material already read, which helps avoid spoilers, or allowed to draw on the whole book. Follow-up questions are supported, so the exchange can stay linked to earlier replies.
An active internet connection is required. That matters for anyone reading offline or on limited mobile data, because the companion cannot run without connectivity.
What the update does not cover
Ask This Book does not work with sideloaded titles or documents sent through Send-to-Kindle. Support is limited to certain Amazon-published or distributed ebooks. Owners who mainly read personal files or non-Amazon catalogues will not see the AI companion on those titles.
Amazon has not published official release notes, so the full list of compatible devices remains unclear, including for many 2024 models. Separate recent accounts say owners of the newer 2026 Kindles will receive the update.
What Pakistani Kindle users should expect next
For readers in Pakistan who already buy books through Amazon’s store, Ask This Book may make dense novels or long non-fiction easier to follow when a connection is available. Those who rely on sideloaded PDFs, academic scans, or Send-to-Kindle files should treat the feature as unavailable on that material until Amazon expands support.
Until Amazon issues clear device notes, owners of older or mid-range Kindles should wait for the automatic install and check whether Ask This Book appears in search or highlight menus after the update finishes.
