Karachi customs have seized a consignment bound for an export processing zone after a joint inspection found goods that did not match the declaration filed with the department.
The Directorate Transit Trade Operations Karachi and the Collectorate of Customs Appraisement examined the shipment together. Director General Transit Trade Irfan Javed said investigators recovered goods valued at Rs68 crore 80 lakh. The consignment was moving to the Peshawar Export Processing Zone at Risalpur when officers acted on confidential information and opened the container.
What the declaration said — and what was found
In the Goods Declaration submitted to customs, the cargo was described as machine press parts. On inspection, officers instead recovered load cells — industrial weighing sensors — from the container. Officials said the items inside neither matched the paperwork nor fit the importer’s approved line of work.
According to the authorities, the Export Processing Zones Development Authority (EPZDA) — the body that licenses firms inside such zones — had cleared the importer to make artificial flowers and plants, suitcases and bags. The recovered goods, they said, were out of step with both the declared description and those licensed manufacturing activities.
Value, duty and legal steps
Under the valuation ruling used in the case, the misdeclared goods were estimated at Rs68 crore 80 lakh. Duty and taxes assessed as payable on that consignment come to Rs16 crore 50 lakh. Customs are proceeding against the company under relevant provisions of the Customs Act. A contravention case is being prepared and a formal case is being registered.
Export processing zones are meant to support manufacturing for export under special customs rules. Accurate declarations are central to that system, because the wrong description can hide the real nature and value of what is moving through Karachi’s transit channels toward zone facilities such as Risalpur.
What happens next
Officials have indicated that legal process under the Customs Act is already in motion. Further outcomes will depend on how the contravention case and the related proceedings progress. No other official updates were given in the material available on this seizure.
