SSGC links Quetta gas bill rise to winter, OGRA tariff

Sui Southern gas rates tied to Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA, the federal gas price setter) tariffs, together with heavier winter use, have pushed up household gas bills in Quetta, according to Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC).

A company spokesperson said the start of the cold season, higher consumption, and the tariff levels fixed by OGRA explain the larger amounts showing up on Quetta bills. SSGC issued the clarification after receiving complaints about heavy bills in the city.

Why Quetta bills are climbing

In winter, many households burn more gas for heating and cooking, so units on the meter rise even when the underlying tariff structure is unchanged. SSGC’s explanation puts that seasonal jump alongside Sui Southern gas rates shaped by OGRA’s prescribed tariffs as the twin drivers of the increase.

The company did not publish a new unit-price table in this statement. It framed the rise as the combined effect of more gas used and the regulator’s existing tariff framework, not as a separate local surcharge announced only for Quetta.

Meters, disputes and how charges can be reviewed

SSGC’s spokesperson said some consumers try to avoid large bills by tampering with meters. Where a meter is found tampered, the company said it bills on the basis of connected load rather than the disrupted meter reading.

Customers who do not accept the company’s decision may apply for a meter replacement and a laboratory test carried out in their presence, the statement said. If test results do not support the extra charges, those amounts are withdrawn.

Supply and complaints in Balochistan

Despite financial losses, SSGC said it is continuing gas supply in Quetta. To handle consumer grievances, it said a helpline desk has been set up in Balochistan so complaints can be registered and followed up.

Households worried about an unusually high bill can therefore ask for a meter check through the company process and use the provincial helpline desk for complaint redressal, while understanding that Sui Southern gas rates under OGRA rules and seasonal use both feed into what appears on the statement.
