Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has formed a high-level committee to investigate Karachi local bodies corruption, acting on complaints of illegal measures by local government institutions. The panel is headed by Provincial Minister and Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah. The chief minister took the step on the instructions of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who had received numerous complaints about wrongdoing inside local bodies.
Complaints that prompted the probe
Party leaders say Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was approached with reports of unlawful recruitments in corporations, district councils, and town and union councils. The same complaints also pointed to budget irregularities and the unauthorised use of power. Nasir Hussain Shah said the PPP chairman had heard grievances ranging from union councils up to district councils, and had directed the Sindh CM to take immediate corrective measures to address and redress them.
Those allegations sit at the heart of the Karachi local bodies corruption case now before the new committee. They concern how staff were hired, how budgets were handled, and whether officials used authority beyond their legal remit. No public list of individual accused persons or completed findings has been released with the announcement of the panel.
Committee meeting and the planned audit
After the committee was constituted, Nasir Hussain Shah chaired a meeting to review all complaints and alleged wrongdoings in the local bodies institutions. Members decided to conduct a comprehensive financial audit of all union councils so that budgetary matters are thoroughly scrutinised. That decision places union-council accounts at the centre of the first concrete step of the Karachi local body investigation.
The meeting’s focus on a full financial check suggests the probe will test claims of irregular spending against the books, while also weighing the wider set of recruitment and power-abuse complaints already recorded. Officials have not yet set out a public calendar for when the audit will finish or how results will be shared.
What the probe covers for now
The Karachi corruption probe, as described so far, covers local government institutions rather than a single office. Corporations, district councils, and town and union councils all appear in the complaints that reached the PPP chairman. The Sindh government has framed the response as corrective action ordered from the top of the party and carried out through the chief minister’s office and the local government minister’s committee.
Until the audit and review produce findings, residents should treat the episode as an official inquiry into serious allegations—not as a completed verdict. What is confirmed is the formation of the committee, the leadership of Nasir Hussain Shah, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s role in directing urgent redress, and the decision to audit union-council finances comprehensively.
