Police in Lahore have arrested two suspects accused of mobile phone snatching, after the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) tracked their movements through the city's Safe City cameras, the authority said. According to a PSCA spokesperson, the pair moved around on a motorcycle, approached people who were not expecting them and rode off with their phones. The two are also alleged to be linked to a snatching case within the jurisdiction of Kahna Police Station, which falls under Lahore's police network. The arrests were made in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province.

How the suspects were traced

After the snatching, staff in the PSCA's virtual patrol team followed the suspects across the authority's Safe City cameras. Virtual patrolling means officers watch live camera feeds from a control room instead of relying only on patrols in the street. Details from this monitoring were passed to the police team, which then made the arrests.

The case shows how the camera network works in practice: the tracking happened on screen, while the arrests were carried out by police on the ground. The spokesperson said the two steps depended on information moving quickly between the authority and the police team.

What officials said about the effort

A PSCA spokesperson said live monitoring was useful for spotting suspects, following their paths and backing police work. The spokesperson also said that the Crime Control Department (CCD), Lahore Police and the PSCA were working together against criminal elements. Officials pointed to modern technology, quick intelligence sharing and cooperation between agencies as factors making crime prevention more effective.

The PSCA urged residents to report crimes, suspicious behaviour and emergencies promptly by calling Police Emergency Helpline 15, so that agencies can respond quickly. The authority said that fast reporting helps improve public safety. Since both suspects are described as allegedly involved, the claims remain allegations at this stage.
