The Rawalpindi Ring Road inauguration date is expected to be October 28, when Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is set to formally open the project at the Banth Interchange on GT Road, the route's starting point. Preparations for the event are underway.
What has been completed
The 38.3-kilometre road has been finished along its main route, with four interchanges at Banth, Chak Beli Khan, Adiala and Chakri. An interchange is a junction where roads cross on different levels, so vehicles can join or leave without meeting traffic at a crossing. Installation of the tolling booth system is expected to be completed before the opening.
Tolling and work still pending
The tolling system has been transferred to the Punjab Ring Road Authority (PRRA), which will operate and maintain it under an arrangement with a company called One Network. The final interchange at Thalian, planned as a broad-based interchange, will be built at a later stage. For now, the Ring Road connects to the motorway at Thalian without an interchange.
Cost approval
The Punjab Development Working Party (PDWP), the provincial body that clears development schemes, has approved the third revised PC-I, the formal cost document for the project. The project is valued at Rs50.4 billion, and that figure also includes the construction cost of the Thalian broad-based interchange.
Ahead of the inauguration date, the main work is the ceremony at Banth and the tolling setup, while the Thalian interchange remains a task for later.
