The government is launching a Rs7.22 billion initiative to expand emergency and intensive care facilities at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). The three-year project, titled Establishment of Stroke Intervention and Expansion of Critical-Care Facilities at PIMS (2024–27), is designed to enhance PIMS Islamabad services by establishing dedicated stroke intervention facilities and increasing the hospital's intensive care capacity.

Hospital sources confirmed that the scheme carries an estimated cost of Rs7,220.956 million. It aims to improve clinical response times for complex emergencies, upgrade diagnostic equipment, and ensure rapid intervention for individuals facing life-threatening medical conditions.

Dedicated stroke intervention and critical care

A primary focus of the investment is the creation of specialized stroke care units. Because acute stroke management relies heavily on prompt assessment, the initiative seeks to establish protocols and facilities that can reduce the likelihood of permanent disability and boost recovery outcomes among stroke patients.

Alongside stroke care, the project funds a broad pims critical care upgrade. This expansion will provide advanced equipment for intensive monitoring, specialized life-support systems, and greater capacity to manage critically ill patients who require continuous medical oversight.

Role within public health goals

The upgrade is aligned with the Equity, Education, Health and Population pillar of the federal government’s URAAN Pakistan programme. PIMS functions as a major public-sector referral hospital for patients arriving from Islamabad and nearby areas, making public investment in its specialized infrastructure central to the capital's medical response system.

Hospital officials noted that expanding intensive care units and establishing dedicated stroke response units will help physicians manage complicated medical emergencies more effectively, while shortening wait times for vital treatment.
