Karak operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa left two terrorists dead and four police personnel dead, the provincial police said in a statement. The operation began at noon on Thursday, after militants blocked Charpira Road the night before, within the limits of Khurram police station. Police said the aim was to locate the militants and follow their movements in the area.

What police said

Command of the operation rested with the DSP of Banda and a DSP from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). Personnel from the bomb disposal unit, a drone team, Rescue 15 and the Rapid Response Force also took part, according to the statement. The Superintendent of Police for operations, all station house officers in the district and other officials were involved as well.

Police raided the house of a commander named Qaiser Iqbal in Charpira, and a gunfight broke out between officers and militants. Two of the militants were killed in that exchange, the statement said. Police added that action against terrorists would continue in the area.

Officers who died

The four police personnel who died were CTD DSP Imranuddin Khan, Sub-Inspector Afzal Awan, Kazim, who was the gunman of the CTD DSP, and Amjad, an official of the bomb disposal unit. Awan was the officer in charge of Lattamber police station. A DSP is a Deputy Superintendent of Police, a senior rank that leads a police sub-division.

The statement called the four officers "martyred", a term Pakistani police use for personnel killed in the line of duty. Police said their deaths reflected the force's commitment to fighting terrorism and keeping law and order.
