Nawan Kot Police in Lahore arrested a police constable on Thursday for allegedly accepting a Rs10,000 bribe to release a proclaimed offender (PO), a term for a person wanted by the authorities who is not in custody. The PO was wanted in a case registered by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the federal body that investigates offences under national law.
The case against the constable
According to a spokesperson for DIG Operations, Constable Nawaz was arrested and locked up in connection with FIR No. 3226/26. A first information report (FIR) is the formal police record that starts a criminal case. The constable was accused of taking Rs10,000 to release Fazal Abbas, who was wanted in FIA Gujrat case No. 200/25, the spokesperson said.
What the police said
DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, a senior police officer in charge of operations, said abuse of authority and corruption would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He said officers who break the law would be held accountable for their actions. He also warned that action would be taken against anyone who misuses the authority of the uniform.
He added that accountability and the supremacy of law inside the police department were non-negotiable. The allegations against the constable have not been tested in court, so he is accused, not convicted.
