Pakistan will host a five-day UN conference in Islamabad from October 27 to 31 on how space technology can support early warnings and disaster preparedness. SUPARCO, Pakistan's national space body, announced the event on Thursday. About 200 to 250 people are expected at the Serena Hotel, including 60 to 70 international delegates and around 150 from within Pakistan.
What the conference will cover
The meeting centres on the UN's Early Warnings for All initiative, which aims to protect communities and key infrastructure from climate-linked disasters. SUPARCO said sessions will look at satellite observations, geospatial data and newer tools, including geospatial artificial intelligence, or GeoAI, which analyses location-based information with machine learning. Participants will also discuss how satellite information can track water supplies, farmland, forests and environmental change.
The gathering will bring together policymakers, diplomats, researchers, UN agencies, development groups and space industry representatives. The programme includes leadership dialogues, technical sessions and expert panels. Young researchers and youth-led climate projects will also receive attention. The event is co-sponsored by UNOOSA, the UN office dealing with outer space affairs, its UN-SPIDER programme, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organisation (APSCO) and the Inter-Islamic Network on Space Sciences and Technology (ISNET).
Aims and next steps
SUPARCO said the aim is to help Pakistan use satellite and geospatial information more effectively for early warnings, climate resilience and disaster risk reduction. Better tools for judging flood, drought and heatwave risks could support more informed decisions and stronger protection for vulnerable communities, the commission said. The conference also seeks closer institutional cooperation and technical training.
The conference closes on October 31 with a closing ceremony and a technical visit to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Delegates will see how the country's disaster systems use geospatial data, satellite tracking and early warning tools in practice. SUPARCO's statement said the event is meant to build international partnerships and a safer, climate-resilient future.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Pakistan Islamabad mein 27 se 31 October tak UN ki ek bari conference karega, jis mein space technology se early warning aur aafat ke khatre par baat hogi. SUPARCO ke mutabiq is se satellite data aur geospatial maloomat ka behtar istemal ho sakta hai, jo sailab, khushk sala aur garmi ki lehar ke faislay tez karne mein madad de sakta hai. Conference ke aakhir mein mehmaan NDMA ka daura bhi karenge. Aam shehri ke liye abhi qeemat, bijli ke bill ya safar mein koi tabdeeli ka elan nahi hua.
