Mansehra’s long-delayed water plan moves ahead

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is preparing to execute a Rs19 billion gravity-flow Mansehra water supply scheme for the city and its suburbs, with a substantial share of financing backed by the Saudi Fund for Development, a Saudi state development lender. Project Director Abid Shah told reporters on Saturday that work is expected to begin shortly after the federal government signed an agreement with the fund.

Mr Shah described the scheme as one of the largest potable water projects ever launched by the provincial government with Saudi support. He said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Health Engineering Department is making rapid progress so residents can receive a reliable, safe and sustainable drinking supply.

How the gravity scheme will work

Officials plan to lay a 65-kilometre pipeline from the water source at Neeli Nadi in the environmentally sensitive Sharan area, which lies between the Kaghan and Manoor valleys. The design will rely on gravity rather than conventional pumping, aiming to lower energy costs and support long-term operation.

Alongside the pipeline, the project will include a modern water treatment plant, storage reservoirs and an upgraded distribution network. The approach is meant to deliver cleaner water with fewer ongoing power needs than pump-driven systems.

Coordination for timely start

Mr Shah said Deputy Commissioner Yasir Ali Khan is giving full support so the Mansehra water supply work can proceed on time. The project management unit is coordinating with the Saudi Fund for Development, the federal Economic Affairs Division and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Planning and Development Department to clear remaining processes and keep implementation on track.
