TEPA Lahore has asked the Punjab government to release more than Rs580 million so it can finish installing AI-based vehicle video detection traffic signals across the city. The Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA), which plans and manages road traffic systems in Lahore, says the scheme received only Rs10 million in the current fiscal year.
How much money is still needed
The project was approved at a cost of more than Rs590 million. With just Rs10 million released so far this year, TEPA Lahore is seeking the balance—over Rs580 million—so work can continue without further delay.
Sources say the TEPA chief engineer has sent a summary to the Punjab Housing Department requesting those funds. The agency wants the full amount released within the current fiscal year so the installation can be completed on schedule.
What work is already done
According to that summary, around 30 percent of the total work, including the pilot phase, has been finished. Officials say the pilot was completed successfully.
TEPA has already put modern pelican signals—push-button crossings for pedestrians—at several spots, including Adda Plot and Jati Umra Chowk. At the remaining sites, signals are to run on an automated vehicle video detection system, which uses cameras to sense traffic and time the lights.
Why TEPA wants the funds this year
The agency has urged the government to free the full sum before the fiscal year ends. Its stated aim is to finish the project on time and ease traffic flow in Lahore through AI-enabled signals rather than leave junctions half-upgraded.
Whether Punjab releases the remaining money will decide how quickly the rest of the city gets the new detection-based lights.
Aasan alfaaz mein
TEPA Lahore ne Punjab sarkar se 580 million se zyada rupay maange hain. Is saal AI traffic signals ke project ko sirf 10 million mile hain. Kaam ka qareeban 30 percent hissa ho chuka hai. Agar baqi funding mil jaye to shehar ke traffic signals behtar aur asaan ban sakte hain.
