What the Senate panel said
Student death focuses on the case of Laiba Ijaz, a gold medalist student's death that a Senate human rights panel linked to alleged overseas study fraud. Meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, the panel chaired by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri pressed for an open, impartial inquiry and voiced alarm at fake visa and admission schemes aimed at Pakistani learners.
Senators discussed how the International Islamic University Islamabad graduate’s case was said to involve money lost on bogus papers for further study in the United States. A senior Islamabad Police officer outlined what is known about the circumstances, how the inquiry is moving, and action against people named as suspects.
Who must answer next
Zehri took strong objection that neither the Higher Education Commission (HEC, the federal body that oversees universities) nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent officials. She ordered both to attend the next sitting with files and a clear account of steps against dishonest education agents.
She asked for a full report on the probe and on steps to stop similar harm. The panel said Islamabad Police, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), HEC and the Foreign Ministry should coordinate so students are better shielded from fake overseas admission and visa firms.
Wider fraud concerns raised in the same sitting
Officials told the committee that roughly Rs5 million had been recovered in another matter tied to overseas study, visas and job offers. The chair told departments to check whether consultancies are legally registered and to act against agents and those who help them.
Senators Atta-ul-Haq, Syed Masroor Ahsan, Quratul Ain Marri and Abid Sher Ali joined the session, along with staff from the NCCIA, FIA, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and police. The same meeting also covered delayed compensation for families of Pakistani seafarers held off Somalia, rising cyber fraud and risky investment pitches, and calls for awareness drives on campuses about phishing and online scams—issues the chair said need tighter timelines and clearer updates for victims.
