Irrigated farms in Punjab urged to sow wheat by Nov 20

Agriculture experts have told farmers in irrigated areas that the wheat sowing time in Punjab runs from 1 to 20 November, and that completing cultivation within that window—with certified seed of approved varieties—is key to higher per-acre yields.

A spokesman of the Agriculture (Extension) Department said in Faisalabad on Monday that timely sowing and careful field preparation are essential for better crop production. He linked the advice specifically to irrigated tracts and said following the schedule, treating seed properly and managing water well can lift wheat output across those parts of Punjab.

Recommended varieties and seed rates

The spokesman said growers should preferably use department-recommended wheat varieties for irrigated areas, including Akbar-19, Falak-24, Sawera-24, Urooj-22, Ujala-2016, Johar-2016, Inqilab-2017, Fakhr-e-Bhakkar-17, Bhakkar Star-19, Ghazi-19, Nishan-21 and Dilkash-20.

He advised a seed rate of 40 to 45 kilograms per acre and said the germination rate should not fall below 85 percent. Farmers were told to treat seed with a suitable chemical before sowing, after consulting local agriculture experts, to guard against seed-borne diseases.

For even coating, he recommended a rotating drum. Where that is not available, he said a plastic bag filled only halfway with the measured seed and the prescribed chemical can be tied shut and shaken from both ends so every seed is covered.

Field preparation and water use

Thorough preparation and proper land leveling matter as much as the calendar, the spokesman said. Hard, compact fields should be ploughed two to three times, and uneven ground leveled with a conventional or laser land leveler where needed.

Before pre-sowing irrigation, fields should be divided into smaller sections so a larger area can be watered with less water. As the wheat cultivation deadline nears, he advised ploughing before sunrise, following each pass with planking, and repeating the cycle two to three times. That practice, he said, helps clear weeds and draws moisture from deeper soil toward the surface, which supports even germination.

He stressed that certified seed, sticking to the advised sowing window, proper seed treatment and efficient water management together can significantly improve wheat yields in irrigated areas of Punjab. For many growers, that means lining up seed, chemicals and machinery now so work is finished before 20 November.
