The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police have plugged anti-drone systems and their own surveillance drones into the Safe City Peshawar Command and Control Centre, so officers can watch live security feeds from across the province in one place.
KP Safe Cities Project Director Deputy Inspector General Ijaz Ahmad said at a news conference at the centre that hostile quadcopters and other drones would be spotted more quickly and could be neutralised. Anti-drone systems already installed in Peshawar and other cities have been linked to the hub, he said.
How the new monitoring works
With Safe City cameras and anti-drone gear tied together, live video from police drones anywhere in KP—including during field operations and offensives against militants by the police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD)—can be viewed at the Command and Control Centre.
DIG Ahmad said that arrangement also lets information move faster to senior officers. During an operation in any area, footage from drones will go straight to the centre so commanders can follow the ground picture and support teams in the field, he said.
Where anti-drone gear is already deployed
Modern anti-drone systems have been placed in Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Bannu to match changing security needs and what officials call emerging aerial threats. Anti-drone guns have also been issued to police in remote and sensitive parts of the province, according to the DIG.
The stated aim is to detect and stop threats from hostile quadcopters and drones more promptly. Control of police surveillance drones across KP has likewise been folded into the central system.
Connectivity gaps and a new UAV unit
DIG Ahmad said weak or missing internet in some areas still makes live monitoring hard. He said police are working with the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco)—Pakistan’s space research body—to improve links.
Separately, KP police have created a specialised human-resource division trained in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) combat. An official said the unit grew from concern that militants’ drone tactics were moving beyond watching and dropping munitions toward swarm-style attacks, and away from only street fighting toward aerial warfare.
Staff have been trained in drone flying, aerial watch, intelligence work, counterterrorism, guarding sensitive sites, and using UAVs in high-risk jobs. The division is described as the first of its kind set up by a police department in Pakistan. An official said officers are prepared not only for surveillance but also for electronic warfare against hostile UAVs.
DIG Ahmad said blending drone watch, anti-drone tools and central monitoring should strengthen how KP police handle militant threats, and that the Safe Cities project is giving technical support as the force tries to make policing more coordinated and modern.
