Britain has overhauled the UK Minister of Religion visa, the permission that lets overseas clergy, missionaries and people belonging to religious orders take senior faith roles and later seek settlement. UK Visas and Immigration says the rewrite covers money rules, which posts qualify, how long each grant lasts, immigration bail, and when past overstaying can be ignored. It also abolishes the former overall six-year limit on time spent on this route.
Roles that qualify for sponsorship
Sponsored posts still centre on pastoral work—guiding worship, preaching, faith teaching, weddings and funerals, counselling and community support. Under the new wording, people in religious orders no longer have to show that their day-to-day work is mainly pastoral. Tasks such as classroom teaching, media production, household labour or office administration no longer block them in the same way. Senior posts inside faith organisations may also receive a similar carve-out.
Money tests and how long permission lasts
If someone is not covered by the National Minimum Wage, an A-rated sponsor must promise living costs and housing for the whole authorised stay. Where the wage floor does apply, the applicant can show a cash buffer of £1,270 kept for 28 days, or that sponsor can pledge help of £1,270 in month one. People already extending after a year or more of lawful residence in Britain may also satisfy the money test that way.
UK religious visa sponsorship still rests on a Certificate of Sponsorship. Each permission lasts no longer than three years, or the job length written on that certificate if that is shorter, then adds 14 days. The old six-year lifetime ceiling is gone. Successful applicants get a digital eVisa inside the UKVI online account.
Points, family rights and settlement
Applying for the UK Minister of Religion visa still demands 70 points: 50 points come from a current Certificate of Sponsorship dated within the three months ahead of the application, 10 from meeting the money rules, and 10 from English at B2 across reading, writing, speaking and listening unless an exemption applies. Applicants must be 18 or older, pay the visa charge and the Immigration Health Surcharge, give identity and biometric data, and supply a tuberculosis certificate when asked. They must also show they truly mean to—and can—perform the sponsored faith duties.
People on immigration bail are generally shut out of this path, though some overstaying can be overlooked under the Exceptions for Overstayers rules. Holders may bring qualifying partners and children as dependants, study, do voluntary work under the usual limits, and take extra paid work for a maximum of 20 hours each week outside sponsored hours if that second job matches their profession and level or sits on the Immigration Salary List. Other side jobs need fresh sponsorship and permission. Public funds are generally off limits.
Settlement can follow five years of continuous residence that meets the rules, if the Life in the UK test is passed and the sponsor confirms the post is still needed. People who earlier held sponsorship on the old Tier 2 Minister of Religion path can seek extensions, job changes and settlement under the current system.
