Pakistan is advancing a fresh Universal Service Fund (USF) push—public money set aside to bring phones and broadband where private networks lag—worth Rs30.8 billion. Fresh fibre of about 3,809 km is meant to reach 459 union councils and towns that still have no service, with officials estimating coverage for nearly 2.8 million residents.

What the assembly was told

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication set out the figures in a written answer to the National Assembly. It said the USF board cleared 25 builds to thicken networks in places that remain poorly served, spanning more than 1,560 mauzas (village clusters).

Twenty-four of those twenty-five schemes are already contracted or being built. The ministry framed the cable work as a way to open faster fixed internet where towers and ducts are still scarce.

Earlier fibre and mobile progress

Under the older USF fibre track, thirty-six schemes set out to wire 1,497 tehsil headquarters, councils and towns along a route longer than 21,700 km. Twenty-six of those schemes are finished, the ministry said, serving 1,089 sites and putting down over 18,300 km of cable.

On the mobile side, USF access schemes seek voice and data where coverage is thin or missing. Of 116 schemes started, ninety-nine are done. Targets run past 22,000 mauzas and a population near 38.4 million. Service has also been stretched along 2,514 km of thin national highways and motorways and into eight tourist spots.

What comes next

With almost the full new slate already awarded or in the field, attention turns to digging, splicing and lighting the remaining fibre so households and shops in those 459 councils can use broadband for school, clinics and small trade. Completion timelines for each site were not listed in the reply.
