What the new Apple App Store age restriction means
Apple’s new Apple App Store age restriction will keep dating apps and AI companions that offer sexual or romantic content behind an 18+ rating. In a Monday note to developers, the company said apps with dating or romantic-relationship features must carry that adult rating, making it harder for minors to install them through the store.
The move sits alongside earlier child-safety work: global age-assurance tools (checks that help confirm a user’s age) and extra parental controls. Many large dating services already limit sign-ups to adults; Apple’s rule goes further by tying the store listing itself to 18+ when those features are present.
Dating apps, AI companions, and the 16 November deadline
From 16 November, developers must use new content descriptors—short labels that spell out what an app does—so the age rating matches dating, romance, or similar features. That matters for pure dating products and for AI companion apps where chat with a romantic or sexual persona is only one of several modes.
Apps such as Character.AI and Replika let people build AI companions framed as friends, partners, or fantasy characters, and are often aimed at younger audiences. xAI last year also launched 3D animated companions with unlockable NSFW (adult sexual) modes. As of last summer, leading AI companion apps on Apple’s store and Google Play had been downloaded about 220 million times worldwide.
Location sharing and a Brazil exception
Beyond dating and relationships, Apple will also require apps to say if they share a user’s real-world location with another person or group. That disclosure is meant to surface privacy risk when someone might not realise their whereabouts are being passed on.
In Brazil, family location-sharing apps may seek an official rating from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) instead of the A16 label local law would otherwise require—an exception Apple noted for that market only.
