Pennsylvania has put a text-based AI-generated ads law on the books. On Thursday, Governor Josh Shapiro signed the Artificial Intelligence Deceptive Advertising Act, which requires clear disclosures on advertising that artificial intelligence has significantly modified or created.

The measure is among the early state efforts in the United States to force AI advertising disclosure on commercial messages. For Pakistani readers who see global brand campaigns online and on TV, it is a concrete example of how governments are starting to label synthetic marketing.

What advertisers must disclose

Under the Act, any advertisement—whether a still image, video, audio clip or text—that “has been significantly modified or generated by artificial intelligence” must include a label in the same format as the ad itself. That means a television spot would carry a spoken or on-screen cue of the same kind, while a printed flyer would need a written notice. The rule is meant to cover everything from expensive national commercials to local restaurant promotions.

The wording also points toward ads that use synthetic material in a way that creates a “false consumer perception” of a product or service. Exactly what counts as false, and who decides, is not spelled out in detail in the law’s publicly discussed terms.

Reach beyond Pennsylvania’s borders

Pennsylvania is described as one of the first states to require disclosures on AI content. Labels are required regardless of where an ad was produced. Campaigns made elsewhere may still need the notice if they are also expected to run in Pennsylvania—so viewers outside the state can encounter the same disclosures when a spot is built for a Pennsylvania airing.

Gaps and open questions

Several openings remain. “Significantly modified” is a subjective test. The law carves out parody, satire, commentary or criticism, and anything that is “evidently fictional,” without a sharp definition of that last phrase. Those ambiguities leave room for dispute over when an AI advertising disclosure is mandatory.

State Senator Nick Pisciottano introduced the bill. His office did not immediately return a request for comment after the signing.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Pennsylvania ke governor ne AI se bani ya zyada badli hui ads pe label lagana lazmi kar diya hai. Ye rule image, video, audio aur text teeno tarah ki ishtiharon par lagta hai. Ab aisi ads pe khula pata chalna chahiye ke AI ne unhein banaya ya badla hai. Online ads dekhne walon ke liye ye is baat ki nishani hai ke AI marketing mein transparency ke qanoon aage barh rahe hain.

Questions readers ask

FAQ

Yes. The new Act does not ban them; it requires a same-format label when an ad has been significantly modified or generated by artificial intelligence.
