The National Grid Company of Pakistan Limited (NGC) has told concerned independent power producers (IPPs) and other plant operators to restore remote telemetry units (RTUs), gateways and related communication links by deadlines set out in an annexure, as it works toward at least 95 percent Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data quality by 31 October 2026.
In a letter to Rihan Akhtar, chief executive of the Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee (CPPA-G), NGC Managing Director Altaf Hussain stressed the need to restore real-time data from the stations listed in that annexure. The message calls for urgent steps so operational data is available to the system operator.
What plants must do
Under the action plan, the affected operators must bring RTUs, gateways and associated links back into service by the target dates in the annexure. They must also name station-wise focal persons to work with the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) and NGC’s SCADA-III Project Management Unit (PMU).
Companies must then confirm to ISMO that real-time data transmission has been restored, and send a copy of that confirmation to the NGC managing director’s office. NGC’s SCADA-III PMU and regional telecommunications teams will offer technical help and coordinate interfaces with the plants.
Grid Code duties and the SCADA target
The letter points to the Grid Code 2023, especially clauses OC 9.5.3.2 and OC 9.5.3.5. Those rules say each user must, at its own cost, install and maintain the telemetry, networking and communication gear needed for real-time exchange with the System Operator’s SCADA system, and must not withhold that data.
NGC said it is running an accelerated plan to hit at least 95 percent SCADA data quality by the October 2026 deadline. Telemetry work at NGC-owned stations is on schedule, it indicated, but the overall target also depends on timely restoration at the annexure stations.
Why real-time plant data matters
Reliable data exchange between power plants and the system operator supports secure, reliable and efficient running of the national grid. SCADA systems let operators monitor and supervise power-system equipment; telemetry links carry operating information from generating stations to the system operator.
Accurate, timely data is especially important for watching generating units and grid-connected facilities. Breaks in telemetry or communication can shrink the system operator’s view of how plants are running. The letter puts installation and upkeep of the required kit on the users, while NGC commits to technical assistance through its teams.
The main text of the letter does not list every affected plant, how many stations need restoration, or how far current SCADA data quality sits below the 95 percent mark; those details sit in the annexure.
Aasan alfaaz mein
National Grid Company ne power plants ko kaha hai ke un ke remote telemetry units aur data links theek karen. Yeh is liye zaroori hai ke grid operator har waqt dekh sake plants ka haal. Target yeh hai ke October 2026 tak SCADA data ki quality kam az kam 95 percent ho. Behtar real-time data se bijli ka nizaam zyada mehfooz aur reliable chal sakta hai.
