The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) plans to mobilise around 30,000 students to visit farmers’ fields across six divisions of Punjab from Oct 30 to Nov 8. The 10-day wheat campaign is being organised with the Punjab Agriculture Department and is meant to support better wheat production and food security in the province.

According to a university press release, the outreach will encourage timely sowing, careful use of agricultural inputs, climate-smart farming and modern cultivation methods. Students will work in Gujranwala, Gujrat, Lahore, Sahiwal, Sargodha and Faisalabad divisions during the drive.

What the campaign will focus on

Officials say the visits are designed to improve wheat productivity by promoting practices that matter at sowing time and through the season. That includes how farmers choose seed, when they plant, how they irrigate, how they manage fertiliser and how they deal with pests.

Climate-smart farming, in plain terms, means adapting field practices so crops cope better with heat, water stress and other weather risks while using inputs more carefully. The campaign frames these steps as part of safeguarding food security—ensuring enough wheat for households and markets.

Why UAF is sending students to the fields

UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Zulfiqar Ali said direct engagement with farmers would help close the gap between agricultural research and what happens on the ground. He described the effort as a way to carry scientific knowledge to the grassroots.

Dr Ghulam Murtaza said the wheat campaign would also expose students to real challenges in wheat cultivation. Seed selection, timely sowing, efficient irrigation, fertiliser management and pest control are among the practical issues they are expected to encounter while meeting growers.

What happens next

The schedule runs for 10 days, beginning Oct 30 and ending Nov 8. During that window, large student teams are expected to move through the six named divisions, meeting farmers in their fields rather than only through classroom or campus programmes.

How individual visits are organised on each farm will depend on local arrangements between UAF and the Punjab Agriculture Department. The stated aim remains consistent across the drive: promote timely sowing, efficient input use and modern, climate-aware practices to lift wheat yields.
