Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb met Ethiopia’s ambassador to Pakistan, Oumer Hussein Oba, in Islamabad on Monday to explore ways to expand bilateral trade, investment and financial ties, the Finance Division said.

The ambassador was accompanied by Melaw Getachew, minister counsellor, and Kalkidan Tadesse, political diplomacy in-charge, according to a finance ministry press release. Officials said the two sides reviewed connectivity, economic and financial cooperation, and opportunities to raise trade and investment between Pakistan and Ethiopia.

Banking links and trade flows

Much of the discussion centred on improving financial and banking connectivity. The Ethiopian envoy stressed that closer cooperation between the two countries’ banking sectors could support larger trade and investment flows.

Aurangzeb and Oba also compared notes on each country’s development experience. They pointed to similarities in economic structures and argued that growth strategies should fit domestic conditions, while sharing lessons that could help both economies expand.

The finance minister briefed the ambassador on reforms under way in Pakistan. Those steps, he said, are meant to secure lasting economic stability and create a base for sustainable, investment-led growth.

Air links and global supply risks

The meeting also covered air connectivity between Pakistan and Ethiopia and how better flight links could strengthen commercial ties and people-to-people contact.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two sides discussed regional and global economic trends. They examined how ongoing conflicts can disrupt energy supplies, fertiliser availability and food security, and how such shocks can hit agricultural production and the continuity of economic activity. Officials said the exchange underlined the need for preparedness and cooperation when managing external shocks.

What officials signalled next

Aurangzeb reaffirmed Pakistan’s interest in stronger economic relations with Ethiopia and in widening cooperation where interests overlap. No new trade volumes, flight schedules or banking deals were announced in the ministry’s account of the meeting; the focus remained on exploring closer working links.
