Pakistan’s National Executive Committee on Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT)—the high-level body that steers the country’s fight against dirty money and terror funding—has approved a revision to the currency transaction report threshold. The decisions came at a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, which also reviewed how the wider AML/CFT system is performing.
Currency Transaction Reports, or CTRs, are filings used to flag cash deals under the anti-money laundering framework. Changing the currency transaction report threshold alters the point at which reporting institutions must notify authorities about large cash activity. The meeting’s public statement did not spell out the new figure, but it said the committee agreed to keep the rules aligned with emerging financial risks.
What else the panel approved
Alongside the CTR change, the committee cleared the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority for inclusion in Schedule IV of the Anti-Money Laundering Act. That step brings the virtual-assets regulator into the list of bodies that sit inside the AML legal structure.
Members also approved adding Section 28 of the Pakistan Maritime Zones Act to Schedule I of the Anti-Money Laundering Act. Taken together, the moves widen how maritime and virtual-asset issues can be tied into money-laundering controls.
FMU capacity, AI tools, and Aurangzeb’s message
Participants reviewed the performance and institutional capacity of the Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU), the agency that receives and analyses financial intelligence on money laundering and terrorist financing. They also discussed initiatives that use Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning inside the AML/CFT setup.
Aurangzeb said timely follow-up on decisions and effective coordination among institutions were needed to strengthen the regime. He called for a clear roadmap to build the FMU’s institutional capacity. The meeting agreed that Pakistan must keep an effective framework able to respond to new risks in the financial sector.
How the currency transaction report threshold fits
In practical terms, the currency transaction report threshold is the cash-size line that triggers a CTR. Revising it is meant to keep reporting rules in step with how money moves today, including through newer channels the committee is bringing closer to the AML Act. Banks and other reporting entities will need to follow whatever updated limit the authorities implement after this approval.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Sarkar ne cash transactions ki reporting ki had (CTR threshold) badalne ka faisla kiya hai. Iska matlab yeh hai ke banks ko bari cash deals kab report karni hain, us line ko naya rakha jaega. Virtual assets wale regulator ko bhi money-laundering qanoon ke andar shamil karne ki manzoori di gai. Aam logon ko banks ki nayi hidayaton ka intezar karna chahiye ke naya had kitna hai.
