Sazgar Engineering Works Limited (PSX: SAZEW) posted a Sazgar Engineering profit of Rs4.04 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, down 9 percent from a year earlier and 54 percent from the prior quarter. Earnings per share settled at Rs66.77. Brokerage analysts said the result still beat industry expectations, helped by stronger-than-expected gross margins.
Alongside the numbers, the company declared an interim cash dividend of Rs5 per share. That equates to a payout ratio of about 7 percent, well below the 21 percent recorded in the same quarter last year, and below what the market had been looking for, according to the brokerage covering the stock.
Sales mix: cars soft, three-wheelers firm
Sazgar Engineering revenue climbed 23 percent year on year to Rs41.71 billion in 1QFY27, with the company pointing to the addition of the Tank 500 to its lineup. Sequentially, though, revenue dropped 45 percent because volumes were weaker.
Four-wheeler sales totalled 3,137 units in the quarter, down 12 percent year on year and 50 percent from the previous quarter. Three-wheeler sales moved the other way, rising 45 percent year on year and 4 percent quarter on quarter to 7,735 units, from 5,346 units in 1QFY26 and 7,408 units in 4QFY26.
Why margins and profit came under pressure
The Sazgar Engineering profit squeeze showed up clearly in the gross margin, which settled at 20 percent against 25 percent in 1QFY26. Research from Topline linked the drop to higher general sales tax (GST — a sales tax on goods) on hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, with the company absorbing part of that burden.
Even so, margins stayed above forecasts after concessionary tariffs on raw materials and parts expired. Analysts noted that inventory of roughly Rs42 billion as of June 2026 had likely covered most raw-material costs for the quarter.
Distribution expenses rose 72 percent year on year to Rs1.7 billion, largely tracking higher net sales. Administrative expenses were up 6 percent year on year but down 6 percent quarter on quarter. Other expenses fell 10 percent year on year and 54 percent quarter on quarter. Other income rose 22 percent year on year to Rs629 million (down 6 percent quarter on quarter), while finance costs jumped 4.2 times year on year on higher long-term borrowings.
Tax rate and what to watch next
The company’s effective tax rate was 37 percent in 1QFY27, compared with 39 percent in both 1QFY26 and 4QFY26. Topline Research said that easing matched a 200 basis-point cut in the super tax under the FY27 budget.
Investors will watch whether four-wheeler volumes recover, how much of the HEV and PHEV tax burden Sazgar continues to absorb, and whether future payouts move closer to last year’s levels as Sazgar Engineering results for later quarters arrive.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Sazgar ka munafa pehli quarter mein Rs4.04 arab raha, jo pichhle saal se 9 percent kam hai. Company ki sales barhi hain, lekin caron ki bikri ghatne aur hybrid gaariyon par zyada tax se margin kam ho gaya. Shareholders ko Rs5 per share ka interim dividend mila, jo pehle ki nisbat chhota hai. Jo log shares rakhte hain unke liye yeh kam munafa aur kam dividend ka signal hai; baqi logon ke liye yeh company ki car-sales aur tax cost ka update hai.
