Weekly inflation in Pakistan rose 0.65% in the week ended October 22, and the annual rate climbed to 11.85%, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data on the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI). The SPI is a weekly index that tracks prices of essential goods. The rise was led by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a fuel used for cooking and heating, and by chicken, which recorded the sharpest increases among the items monitored. The reading followed a 0.04% decline in the previous week, when the annual rate stood at 11.38%.

Biggest weekly price moves

LPG was the largest mover, up 22.44% during the week. The average price of an 11.67-kilogram cylinder rose to Rs6,310.76 from Rs5,154.16 the week before. Over the past year, LPG prices were up 107.12%.

Chicken rose 12.20% in the week, and live chicken reached Rs444.27 per kilogram. Onions rose 4.19%. On the other side, tomatoes fell 21.99% and petrol prices dropped 3.63%, which partly offset the increases.

Wider basket and annual trend

Of the 51 items monitored, 19 rose, 12 fell and 20 were unchanged. The highest-expenditure group, the category that takes the largest share of household spending, recorded 12.69% inflation on a yearly basis. The combined index stood at 374.84 points.

The weekly figures show what changed but do not give reasons for the rise in LPG or chicken prices, so no cause is confirmed here. The next weekly reading will show whether these increases continue or ease.
