Basant 2027 Lahore will be held from March 12 to 14, 2027, Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi said after a meeting to review the arrangements for the festival. The Punjab government has also made a 3.5-foot boundary wall mandatory for anyone hosting Basant activities, with a deadline of December 31, 2026. Kite flying will be barred on all other days, and the measures are meant to make the celebration safer for the people who take part in it.
Safety rules for roofs and buildings
Dr Qazi said kite flying will not be permitted on roofs that are unsafe or structurally unsound. Property owners who want to host Basant activities must build the boundary wall by December 31, 2026. Residents are also required to finish all necessary repairs on designated roofs, ladders and balconies before that date.
The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore has been told to carry out safety inspections of old buildings and residential rooftops. Kite flying will not be allowed on any structure judged to be unsafe, including during the festival days.
Penalties and kite-flying dates
Kite flying will remain strictly prohibited on every day except the official Basant days of March 12 to 14, 2027. The government has warned that anyone flying kites outside those dates faces heavy penalties, including fines of up to Rs 2 million and a five-year prison sentence.
The rules set a clear split between the festival window and the rest of the year. Anyone planning to fly kites should check the dates before going up, because the penalties apply to every day outside the official period.
What happens next
Preparations for Basant 2027 Lahore now centre on the December 31, 2026 deadline. Owners and residents who host Basant activities will need the boundary walls and roof repairs in place by then. Until the festival days in March, kite flying stays banned outside the official dates announced by the Punjab government.
