CPC party envoy begins Islamabad visit
China-Pakistan relations latest news this week turns on a rare party-channel visit: Liu Haixing, who leads the Communist Party of China's International Department, reached the capital on Sunday for his first official stop in Pakistan. Ishaq Dar, Pakistan's foreign minister, invited him. He is due to meet senior Pakistani figures and, with Dar, jointly lead a major session on Monday.
The Foreign Office framed the trip as part of continuing contacts between the two states and between their political parties. Officials said it shows both sides still want to reinforce what they call their all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.
Why a party-channel stop matters
Liu does not speak for China's foreign ministry in the usual sense. He runs a Communist Party arm that keeps contact with ruling and opposition parties worldwide — a track separate from classic embassy work, though it still follows the broader line set by Beijing's leadership. That party role is why the stop carries weight beyond a routine bilateral call.
The International Department dates to 1951 and handles dialogue between parties on governance, development and world affairs. Liu sits on the 20th CPC Central Committee. He took charge of the department in September 2025 after earlier posts as an assistant foreign minister, as head of European affairs at the foreign ministry, and as a senior aide at the party National Security Commission office led by President Xi Jinping.
Anniversary year and earlier Beijing talks
Pakistan and China are marking 75 years since they opened formal diplomatic links. Dar and Liu held talks in the Chinese capital earlier in January. That round covered party contacts, regional issues and work under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) — the main joint infrastructure and investment programme that anchors much of the China-Pakistan partnership.
According to the Foreign Office, both sides then voiced comfort with what they termed a "steady and forward-looking trajectory" and planned suitable events for the anniversary. China-Pakistan relations latest news around Liu's arrival therefore sits inside both the anniversary calendar and that January follow-up.
