Nearly 10,000 smoke challans issued in Lahore crackdown

Under the Lahore vehicle smoke rule, CTO Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi says polluting commercial fleets risk losing route permits and licences as night checks expand.

Lahore Traffic Police are rolling out a Lahore vehicle smoke rule aimed at commercial fleets: operators caught running smoke-belching buses, trucks or similar vehicles can lose both their route permits and their driving licences, as the city pushes harder against winter smog.

Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), said the force will treat polluting commercial traffic as a priority. He made clear that licence suspension sits alongside permit action for anyone found breaking the new expectations.

Night checks and what officers are looking for

Enforcement has moved beyond daytime roadside stops. Officers have set up dedicated overnight screening points to spot vehicles that pour out exhaust, carry excess weight, or look badly neglected.

Those checkpoints feed a wider crackdown that already shows large volumes of cases, according to figures shared by the CTO.

How many vehicles have already been booked

Police data cited by Shirazi put smoke-related challans at 9,998 so far. Separately, 22,241 vehicles drew action for missing fitness papers or for being kept in a run-down state.

Overloading has drawn the heaviest tally: action against 233,476 vehicles. Another 6,745 were stopped for hauling sand, soil or other dusty cargo without covers that limit particle spill into the air.

Dumpers, public fleets and the next phase

Shirazi also said uncovered trolleys and dumpers bringing sand or soil will be refused entry into Lahore. The aim is to cut dust that mixes with exhaust during the smog season.

Written notices have gone to a range of government and semi-government bodies, urging them to fix or service any of their own vehicles that emit heavy smoke. Traffic officials said they will keep tightening field work, framing cleaner air as a public-health and safety need rather than a one-off campaign.

For commercial drivers and owners, the Lahore vehicle smoke rule means fitness, exhaust condition and covered loads are no longer optional paperwork issues—they can decide whether a vehicle stays on the road.
