Arrests and recovered goods
Lahore police say they have arrested 5,212 people connected to 2,410 criminal gangs so far this year. Officers have also traced more than 34,000 cases filed against those suspects, the force's spokesperson said. Recovered stolen goods are valued at more than Rs889.6 million.
The list of recovered items includes 126 tolas of gold, 72 cars, 1,622 motorcycles, 5,869 mobile phones and 69 laptops. A tola is a traditional unit of weight used for gold in South Asia. According to the spokesperson, the vehicles, phones, laptops and other valuables have been handed back to their owners.
Police leadership's view
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana credited the results to a well-planned strategy, joint work and teamwork within the force. He said returning stolen belongings to citizens is a central goal for Lahore police.
Kamyana has told officers to pursue the people who help gangs operate and to widen the scope of operations against criminal elements. Supervisory officers have been asked to monitor crime-control work and law-and-order efforts personally. He also called for tougher operations to curb crime and to arrest proclaimed offenders, meaning people a court has declared wanted, along with other anti-social elements.
Context and what comes next
Lahore is the capital of Punjab, the country's most populous province. The figures come from police statements and have not been checked by an independent body, so they reflect the force's own account.
The CCPO's directions suggest the drive against gangs will continue, with senior officers overseeing the work.
