Lahore ranked as the world's most polluted major city on Friday morning as dense toxic air drove the air quality index to hazardous levels. The surge in Lahore smog today saw readings climb to an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 410, far exceeding safe limits and putting the health of millions of residents at risk.

International monitoring platform IQAir placed Lahore at the top of its global city rankings. India's New Delhi stood in second place with an AQI reading of 203, followed by Senegal's Dakar at 196. Lahore was the only Pakistani metropolis in the top 20 list of polluted cities on Friday morning, while Karachi recorded a comparatively lower AQI of 110.

Dangerous Levels of PM2.5

The primary contributor to the crisis was fine particulate matter known as PM2.5. Measurements showed that the concentration of these micro-particles reached 45.2 times the World Health Organisation's annual air quality guideline value.

PM2.5 particles measure 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter, allowing them to penetrate deep into human lungs and enter the bloodstream. Sustained exposure to these elevated concentrations significantly elevates the risk of severe respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular complications, and long-term health damage.

Health Advisories and Seasonal Factors

Medical practitioners advised residents across the provincial capital to wear protective face masks whenever venturing outdoors. Recommendations also urged citizens to avoid exercising outside, keep home and office windows shut tightly, and run indoor air purifiers where possible.

Air quality in Lahore deteriorates sharply during the onset of winter each year. The recurring smog crisis is driven by a combination of vehicular exhaust, uncurbed industrial emissions, and the burning of crop residue in surrounding farming regions. Seasonal weather conditions trap these airborne contaminants close to the ground, preventing the dispersal of pollutants and leaving a heavy blanket of smog across the urban area.
