The United States has spent more than $47 billion so far on its war in Iran, according to Pentagon data, pushing US Iran war costs more than 25% above the Defence Department’s July estimate.

The latest figure covers operational spending linked to prosecuting the conflict. It has not been released publicly, and the Pentagon did not immediately comment on the estimate when asked.

How the bill breaks down

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth put the war’s cost at $37.5 billion in July. The newer tally is higher still. Officials tied the update to day-to-day operational outlays, from flight operations to cyber support.

Replacing munitions used in the fighting is projected to cost more than $29 billion. More than $6 billion would be needed to replace military equipment and “platform losses,” including aircraft and many drones lost in the war.

Those estimates do not clearly include the large bill expected to repair damage to US bases hit by Iranian missile and drone strikes.

From a short war to a longer campaign

President Donald Trump opened the conflict jointly with Israel in February and said it would be brief. Early US tactics leaned on costly precision missiles to weaken Iranian air defences, with the aim of later using cheaper gravity bombs such as air-launched JDAMs, which are in large supply.

An April ceasefire gave Iran time to reopen underground storage and restore some defences, missiles and drones that had been out of reach. Trump has since imposed a naval blockade meant to cut Iran’s oil-export income and has left open a return to combat after the midterm elections.

US officials, speaking anonymously, say the Pentagon has been preparing to resume heavy fighting if ordered.

Politics, energy and the midterms

The rising cost lands as Republicans face political strain from an unpopular war ahead of the November 3 election that will set control of Congress for the next two years. Trump’s party holds a narrow majority in both chambers.

The war’s effect on global energy prices has weighed on support for Republican candidates and on Trump’s approval ratings, the available account of the political backdrop says.
