Two people, including a child, were killed and six others were injured on Tuesday when a staircase collapsed during an anti-encroachment drive in Aloch Bazaar, Puran tehsil — the main focus of Shangla after bystanders fell into a stream.

Rescue 1122 said the administration was demolishing a building when the staircase gave way. Several children standing on it fell into the stream with the others, leaving two dead and six hurt.

Who was killed and who was hurt

The dead were identified as Irshad, 50, and a child, Abbas. Residents said Abbas was the only brother of four sisters.

The injured were named as Samiullah, 12; Aurangzeb, 14; Anas, 14; Baseer, 15; Mohammad Zakariya, 8; and Murad Khan, 34. Further official detail on their condition was not immediately available.

Anti-encroachment drive and public tension

An anti-encroachment drive is a campaign in which the administration removes structures it says occupy land without permission. The Shangla accident in Aloch Bazaar took place as that campaign continued in different parts of the district.

The drive has met resistance from members of the public in some areas, pointing to local tension over the removal of buildings. The deaths also raised concerns about safety steps when such operations are carried out in busy places.

Official response and inquiry

The administration’s immediate reply to the incident was not available in early accounts. Shangla deputy commissioner Hamid Ali later ordered an inquiry and named the additional deputy commissioner (general) and the assistant commissioner of Martung as inquiry officers.

They were told to examine the circumstances, establish the facts, and submit a report within 24 hours. That order is the clearest official step so far in Shangla news today.
