Barclays Bank job cuts will affect around 5,000 roles, or roughly five percent of the bank's global workforce, the British lender said on Thursday. The reductions are due to be completed by the end of 2026 as part of an efficiency drive driven by artificial intelligence (AI), a term for software that can take on tasks people once did by hand.
The announcement came alongside an earnings update. It showed Barclays' net profit grew 13 percent in the third quarter, so the cuts were announced at a time when the bank was reporting higher profits.
What the bank said
Barclays described its plan as "organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI". That wording points to changes in how the bank is organised and how it uses technology, not only to a single reduction in staff numbers.
The bank has presented the plan as a way of making its operations more efficient. The job figure is set against its global workforce, which is why it is described as a share of total staff.
Which roles are affected
Barclays said about 60 percent of the job losses relate to support functions. It also said the cuts include fewer developers, because AI makes its people more productive.
Support functions are the teams that sit behind front-line work, so the bulk of the reductions is not described as coming from customer-facing staff.
What happens next
The bank has set the end of 2026 as the timeline for the reductions. Further detail on timing by location or division has not been reported yet.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Barclays Bank 2026 ke aakhir tak lagbhag 5,000 jobs kam karne ja raha hai, jo us ke aalmi staff ka lagbhag paanch fisad hai. Bank ke mutabiq yeh AI se chalne wali efficiency ka hissa hai, aur zyadatar cuts support shobon mein hongi. Pakistan ke aam qaari ke liye is ka seedha asar abhi wazeh nahi hai, lekin yeh dikhata hai ke bade banks AI ke sath apna kaam badal rahe hain.
