Rivian is widening its software partnership with Volkswagen Group to cover artificial intelligence, licensing elements of the AI voice assistant it has begun rolling out in its own electric vehicles. The step was outlined in Rivian’s third-quarter investor presentation released Thursday. The companies did not say how much the licensing is worth, what the payment terms are, or which Volkswagen models will use the technology.
The move sits inside the Rivian–Volkswagen joint venture formalised in 2024 and valued at up to $5.8 billion. That deal already centres on Rivian’s electrical architecture and vehicle software for Volkswagen’s next generation of cars. Adding the assistant, Rivian said, is “a proof point for the extensibility of the platform we’ve built in-house.”
How the joint venture grew
The tie-up began with a joint venture valued at up to $5 billion. Within months, Volkswagen raised its planned investment in Rivian to as much as $5.8 billion by 2027. An independent company set up for the partnership started work in November 2024, focused on bringing Rivian’s software and electrical systems into Volkswagen’s forthcoming vehicles.
Volkswagen has lagged rivals such as Tesla in offering software-led cars. Rivian’s stack—compute, sensors, displays, lighting and sound under one roof—is meant to support frequent over-the-air updates that go beyond basic fixes. On redesigned R1 vehicles, Rivian cut electronic control units from 17 to seven and reduced wiring, arguing that foundation can support advanced software and automated driving.
Where the AI assistant fits
Rivian spent about two years building the assistant before demonstrating it last year. The feature reached customers in September 2026 on the R1S SUV, R1T pickup and midsize R2 SUV. Drivers and passengers can talk to the vehicle and control some functions. Founder and chief executive RJ Scaringe has said Rivian built an in-house “agentic” framework that interprets what a person wants and routes the request to the right software—capability that could later run AI agents from other firms, such as Anthropic.
The assistant could first appear in a Volkswagen product on the ID EVERY1, a low-cost electric four-door hatchback. That model is already lined up as the first VW vehicle to use Rivian’s software and electrical architecture under the joint venture. Rivian did not confirm that timeline or name other models.

Aasan alfaaz mein
Rivian apni gaariyon ka AI voice assistant Volkswagen ko license kar raha hai. Yeh un ke pehle se chal rahe software partnership ka hissa hai. Abhi fee aur exact models clear nahi. Pakistan ke buyers ke liye seedha asar abhi nahi, lekin global EV software is tarah share ho rahi hai.
