Granola, known for turning meetings into notes, has launched a free dictation feature on Mac. Users can hold the Fn key, speak, and have cleaned and formatted text dropped into whatever app they are using—from email and chat to notes and AI prompts.
The company said the tool allows unlimited words at no charge. That puts voice typing alongside its existing meeting notetaker, so the same product can capture a call and also handle everyday typing.
How Granola dictation works on Mac
Granola dictation currently runs on Mac in the same way many system-wide voice tools do. After the user presses Fn and starts talking, the software tidies the speech and places the finished text where the cursor is. Because it works across applications, someone can reply to a message, draft a prompt, or write a short note without switching into a separate writing app.
The company said the same capability will arrive on iOS and Windows soon. No further timing details were given beyond that plan.
Why voice apps are overlapping
Months earlier, Wispr—better known for dictation—added a meeting notetaker. Granola is now moving in the opposite direction: a meeting-first product adding dictation. Both firms sit in the broader voice AI market; Granola is valued at $1.5 billion and Wispr at $2 billion.
Granola’s focus remains meeting-related automation and note-taking. Wispr, by contrast, is building its own models through a research lab that looks at different ways people interact with computers.
The overlap is not limited to these two. Other voice startups, including Fireflies, Speechify and Monologue, have also mixed meeting notes with dictation. Earlier this year, the usual approach was a narrow app that did one job well. More products are now trying to get more value from capturing speech once and using it for several tasks.
What happens next
For now, Mac users of Granola can try the free, unlimited dictation feature as described. Expansion to phones and Windows depends on the company shipping the versions it has promised. How useful the tool feels will depend on accuracy, language support and how smoothly it fits into daily writing—details that were not spelled out beyond the Mac launch and the cross-app Fn-key workflow.
