Awami Tehreek draws a hard line in Sukkur
Awami Tehreek rejects new provinces plan proposals floated by the centre, party organisers told a Sunday gathering in Sukkur. Speakers framed fresh provincial boundaries, extra administrative layers and talk of a 28th Constitutional Amendment as steps that would weaken the place of Sindh and other national groups in the federation.
The meeting sat inside a longer public drive the party says it is running against those boundary changes. Campaign themes also covered what leaders called takeover of Sindh’s minerals and land, and opposition to canals and dams of every kind, naming the Jalalpur scheme among them.
How leaders framed the political moment
From the stage, speakers argued that the present “post-hybrid” order feels harsher than the military regimes associated with Zia ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf. They said carving new provinces and amending the Constitution in the way they fear would outstrip even the old One Unit model, which they tied to Ayub Khan’s rule and to the denial of national identities they believe helped break the country apart.
They alleged that courts have been bent to executive will through what they termed “black laws”, ordinances and constitutional changes, and that press freedom has been crushed so thoroughly that democratic life is hollowed out. Provincial authority, they claimed, is being pulled toward Islamabad. They further alleged a design to take ports and the coastal strip of Sindh and Balochistan and place them under what they called “American imperialism”.
Leaders described Sindh as their ancestral home and said any blow to its existence would meet resistance. They pledged that large numbers of Sindhis would keep a non-violent campaign to defend the province and its natural wealth.
Water, Wapda and the Nara Canal dispute
On water, the conference treated schemes that spoil safe drinking supplies as a form of terrorism. Speakers singled out a Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda — the federal hydropower and water body) idea, under the Ghotki Drainage Project, to push polluted discharge into the Nara Canal. They cast that plan as a plot amounting to genocide against Sindh’s people and called for the arrest and severe punishment of the Wapda staff they hold responsible, so that millions of residents, livestock, birds and water life are not put at risk again.
Local organisation and speakers
A party statement named among the speakers AT organiser Lal Jarwar, Sattar Rind, Kashif Mallah, Advocate Sarwan Jatoi, newly chosen District President Zulfiqar Mirani, Sindhyani Tehreek District Sukkur President Shamshad Bappar and Rubina Bhatti.
Delegates also chose a fresh AT District Sukkur team: Mirani as president, Jatoi as general secretary, Monis Ibrahim Channa as vice president, Mehtab Bulo as joint secretary and Riaz Malik as treasurer.
