The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) — the body that runs elections — has announced December 20 as the polling date for Islamabad local government elections and will hold a meeting to discuss arrangements and finalise the modalities for conducting them.
Reports say the meeting will focus on locking in the plan for polls in the federal capital, where an elected local government has been missing for nearly five years. The commission has decided to proceed under the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act, 2015, which remains in force.
How the December 20 polls are meant to work
Under that legal framework, voting will take place in 50 constituencies. After those results, the mayor and deputy mayors are to be elected. That sequence is set by the existing law rather than by a new statute.
An ordinance that proposed amendments to the Local Government Act was promulgated earlier but lapsed on September 6. The final delimitation of constituencies was then published on October 14, which cleared the way for the ECP to move ahead under the 2015 Act.
Why the polls were delayed for years
The term of the previous local government expired in February 2021. The ECP was required to hold elections within 120 days of that expiry. Instead, the polls were repeatedly put off as the federal government and the commission carried out multiple rounds of delimitation and issued election schedules that were later postponed.
Constituencies and union councils have been delimited six times, and election schedules have been announced four times. The previous election programme was issued on October 9 and had set polling for February 2026. The new December 20 date supersedes that earlier calendar for Islamabad local government elections.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- February 2021: The previous Islamabad local government’s term expired; polls were due within 120 days.
- September 6: An ordinance proposing changes to the Local Government Act lapsed.
- October 9: A fresh election programme was issued, then scheduling polling for February 2026.
- October 14: Final delimitation of constituencies was published.
- December 20: Polling date now set for Islamabad’s local government vote; ECP to meet on arrangements and modalities.
What comes next
The immediate next step is the ECP meeting on arrangements and modalities. Practical details of how voting will be organised on the ground will be settled there, still under the 2015 Act and the October 14 delimitation. Residents should watch for formal notifications on nomination, campaign and polling procedures once those modalities are finalised.
