Islamabad Water has intensified an Islamabad restaurant grease trap inspection campaign, targeting restaurants, hotels, cafes and fast-food outlets that have not installed proper oil and grease traps or have failed to clean and maintain them regularly.

Field teams have already issued challans to outlets found breaching the prescribed rules, the department said. The push covers commercial kitchens across the capital and is framed as an ongoing compliance drive rather than a one-day sweep.

Why grease traps are under scrutiny

According to Islamabad Water, pouring kitchen waste, oil and grease straight into sewer lines is a major reason for repeated blockages, sewage overflows and related sanitation and public health problems. Commercial grease traps are meant to catch that waste before it reaches the network.

The department said the Islamabad restaurant grease trap inspection effort is intended to stop oil, grease and kitchen residue from entering the sewerage system, and thereby cut the overflows that disrupt neighbourhoods and streets.

What outlets have been told to do

Islamabad Water has directed all restaurants, hotels, cafes and fast-food outlets in the city to fit appropriate oil and grease traps in line with its standard operating procedures (SOPs)—written rules for how traps should be installed and looked after—and to keep up regular cleaning and maintenance.

Establishments that skip installation or neglect upkeep risk challans and further legal action. The department did not publish a fine schedule or a fixed cleaning timetable in its latest statement, only that cleaning and maintenance must be regular and that enforcement will continue.

What happens next

Islamabad Water said checks will keep running across Islamabad and that legal steps will follow where requirements are still ignored. For owners, that means confirming traps are in place and serviced; for residents, the stated aim is fewer sewer blockages tied to kitchen waste.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Islamabad Water ab restaurants, hotels aur cafes ke grease traps check kar raha hai. Jin jagahon par trap nahi hai ya safai nahi hoti, unhen challan ho raha hai. Kitchen ka tel aur grease sewer mein nahi jana chahiye, warna naliyan band hoti hain. Is liye eateries ko trap lagana aur uski regular safai rakhni hogi.

The department says kitchen waste, oil and grease discharged into sewers cause recurring blockages, overflows and sanitation and public health problems, so it is checking that traps are installed and maintained.
