Pakistan beat England by 87 runs in a one-day international tri-series match at the Rawalpindi Stadium, with all-rounder Arafat Minhas the decisive figure. Pakistan made 302 for 9 in their 50 overs, and England were bowled out for 215 in 38.4 overs. Errors in the field and with the bat let Pakistan back into the contest, and the win leaves Pakistan with two wins from two in the series.

Pakistan's total and England's missed chances

The Pakistan vs England match turned on a few moments in the field. Pakistan were 190 for 5 in the 37th over when wicketkeeper Jordan Cox dived and dropped Arafat on 12, one of three catches England missed during the innings. Hasan Nawaz made 79 from 74 balls, and Arafat scored 59 from 58, lifting Pakistan to a total England had to chase in an ODI, where each side bats for up to 50 overs. Baker took 3 for 65 for England.

England started the chase briskly and were 91 without loss at one point. Ben Duckett then top-edged a pull and was out for 45. Tom Banton was caught at mid-wicket for 57 after he poorly played a long hop from Arafat, and the innings lost its momentum from that point.

Arafat's spell and England's collapse

Arafat finished with six wickets for 40 runs from left-arm spin. He bowled England captain Harry Brook for five with a fine delivery, and Naseem Shah dismissed Joe Root for 33 with a ball that kept low. Jordan Cox was given lbw off Arafat, and Jamie Overton was caught near the boundary off the same bowler.

England lost their last seven wickets for 50 runs. Gus Atkinson was run out at the end of the innings, which added to the visitors' problems. England were missing Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Jacob Bethell, and they had won their three previous ODI series this year, but the loss was one they could have avoided.

What comes next

Pakistan are close to the final of the tri-series after two wins from two. England next play Sri Lanka at the same Rawalpindi ground on Thursday, and both teams are still looking for their first win in the series.

The tri-series is also preparation for the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa next year. This match was the first of a potential 21 ODIs England may play before that tournament, and the format is designed to recreate the pressure of tournament cricket. England's winter also includes two trips to Australia and Test tours of South Africa and Bangladesh.
