The Sindh cabinet has decided to make public the report of a judicial commission that probed the murder of entrepreneur Mir Raza, and has ordered that it be posted online. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at the Chief Minister's House in Karachi. The cabinet also moved to have the report's recommendations followed up, not just released.

What the cabinet decided

The report was prepared by a judicial commission led by Justice Umar Sial. A judicial commission is an inquiry headed by a judge, set up to examine a specific matter. The cabinet instructed that the document be uploaded to the Home Department's website on the day of the meeting. Completion of that upload had not been confirmed at the time of writing.

To oversee the recommendations, the Chief Minister formed a special committee. It includes Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, Nasir Hussain Shah, Saeed Ghani and the Advocate General of Sindh, the province's chief law officer. The Chief Minister also directed authorities to provide a copy of the probe report to Mir Raza's family without delay. The material placed before the cabinet was presented in seven separate envelopes.

The family's demands

Speaking outside the court with his counsel, advocate Jibran Nasir, Mir Raza's father, Mir Hussain, said the police had been negligent in investigating his son's case. He said the family's concerns had been confirmed by the commission's findings. Earlier in the day, he had called for a Joint Investigation Team (JIT), a team of investigators drawn from more than one agency, to probe the murder.

He asked Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Faryal Talpur to hand the report to the family and make it public after the cabinet meeting. He also demanded strict action against the police officers the commission found negligent. He said the family had repeatedly raised shortcomings in the police investigation through the media. The full text of the findings has not been summarised here, and readers should look to the published document for the details.

The next steps are the publication of the report on the Home Department's website and the committee's work on the recommendations. No date was given for the committee's first meeting.
