Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to take part in the Islamabad local government elections scheduled for December 20, directing its district and town organisations to file nomination papers in every ward of all union councils between November 2 and 6.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the federal body that runs polls, has fixed that date for voting in the capital. PTI’s Islamabad wing president Amir Mughal said the party would contest “all 125 seats of union councils,” after what he described as city-wide feedback in which “over 95 per cent of people suggested contesting the elections.”

How the party reached the decision

According to a party statement issued on Wednesday, Mughal, Shoaib Shaheen and Malik Aamir held more than 25 meetings across Islamabad’s three electoral constituencies over the previous three days. The decision followed a series of online consultations with around 400 office-bearers from regional and district organisations, eight town organisations, all 125 union councils, and party wings including labour, the Insaf Students Federation, youth, traders and women’s wings, plus the advisory council, working committee and core committee.

The statement said 95 per cent of those office-bearers backed contesting. PTI said it would field candidates committed to public service and loyal to the political ideology of founder Imran Khan, favouring workers who had stayed at the forefront of the party’s struggle. Mughal said the party would fight the polls without focusing on which election symbols candidates are allotted.

Criticism of the local government framework

PTI argued that the government plans to hold the Islamabad local body elections under a flawed law that leaves elected representatives without meaningful powers, even over basic municipal work such as street cleaning, while concentrating authority in the bureaucracy. The party also opposed a reported move to replace direct election of chairmen and vice chairmen with an indirect vote through councillors, describing that arrangement as a possible route for pre-poll rigging if councillors were intimidated or pressured.

It questioned the plan to announce results four days after polling, saying the gap could allow manipulation. The ECP has reserved December 21 to 24 for consolidation of results. Claiming Islamabad has long been a PTI stronghold, the party said it expected a sweeping win, similar to the outcome it says it achieved in the 2024 general elections. Mughal also said the commission had already postponed the election four times and feared another delay because of the party’s popularity. PTI vowed to press for the vote to go ahead on schedule.
